Syrah finally regains access to Balama mine
ASX-listed Syrah Resources has restored site access at its Balama graphite mine, in Mozambique, following disruptions from protest action and lack of government intervention since mid-2024.
Syrah reached a formal agreement with farmers and government authorities in April, which led to the majority of protestors discontinuing actions at Balama; however, a small group of people continued to block site access for “no legitimate reason nor claim against Syrah”.
The Mozambican government authorities managed to clear the remaining illegal protest action on May 3 and 4, which enabled Syrah to restore site access at Balama.
The company confirms that it is mobilising camp support, inspection and maintenance teams, with the aim of restarting operations and product shipments at Balama in due course.
The prolonged shutdown of the mine was driven initially by farmland resettlement grievances and later entangled in broader election-related unrest. The company had not produced graphite for three consecutive quarters, with sales also having been placed on hold until production resumes.
Syrah had to declare a force majeure under its Balama Mining Agreement last year, which remains in effect. The delay in resolving the protest situation has been exacerbated by wider civil disruptions and the late formation of Mozambique’s new government in January.
The company did not provide guidance on when production at Balama may restart.
